PS2 BIOS for Android

Which Android emulator should you use?
NetherSX2 for most people. PCSX2's own Android build is the rising official option.

- PCSX2 for Android is the official emulator's own build. It is newer on mobile but improving quickly.
- AetherSX2 still runs, but it gets no updates. Use it only if you already have it installed.
- ARMSX2 is a newer project. It shows promise but is still maturing.
- Play! runs a slice of games and needs no BIOS at all.
- Avoid DamonPS2, which is old and widely criticized.

Is PS2 emulation on Android any good?
On a mid-range or better phone, yes. Many PS2 games run well, and the BIOS is the same either way.
A capable phone handles a large part of the library at full speed. Heavier titles ask for more power, and PAL games run slower than their USA versions, just as they did on the console. Whatever your phone, the BIOS step is identical, so start there and adjust the graphics settings per game.
AetherSX2 is discontinued: what that means for you
AetherSX2 stopped getting updates and was pulled from the Play Store. It still runs, but NetherSX2 is the one to use now.
Because the app is gone from the store, people search for it and land on random APK sites, and those files often carry malware. You do not need them. NetherSX2 is the maintained version of the same emulator, so you get the AetherSX2 experience with ongoing fixes. Install it from its official GitHub page, not from an ad-filled mirror.

Download the BIOS for Android
You need the PS2 BIOS file before any Android app will run a game. The USA BIOS covers most libraries.

How to add the BIOS in NetherSX2 or AetherSX2
Use the in-app BIOS step. Point it at your file and the app imports it.
- Copy the BIOS file to your phone. The Downloads folder is fine. Extract it first if it is zipped.
- Open the app. On first launch it runs a short setup and asks for the BIOS. If you already set it up, open Settings and find the BIOS or System section.
- Browse to your file and select it. The app imports the file for you.
- Load a game to confirm it boots past the PlayStation 2 logo.
Do not try to drop the file into a folder by hand. These apps manage the BIOS themselves, so the in-app import is the way that works.
How to add the BIOS in PCSX2 for Android
Same idea. The PCSX2 Android build has a BIOS step during setup, or in its settings.
Point it at the same file you would use on desktop. There is nothing extra to convert. If the app does not pick it up, extract the file first and import it again from the settings.
Which region BIOS should you use on Android?
The USA BIOS for most players. Match the region only for region-locked Japanese or PAL games.
This is the same rule as on desktop, because Android emulators read the exact same BIOS file. Keep the USA one as your default, and add another region only if a specific game needs it.
Does the BIOS work across every Android emulator?
Yes. One PS2 BIOS Android file covers NetherSX2, AetherSX2, and PCSX2 on your phone.
There is no separate AetherSX2 BIOS or NetherSX2 BIOS to hunt down. They all read the same file, the same one desktop PCSX2 uses. So you dump or download it once, and it works everywhere you play.
iOS note, and the fake "AetherSX2 for iOS"
There is no official AetherSX2 for iOS. Any site offering one is a scam.
On iPhone and iPad, your real options are Play! (which needs no BIOS), ARMSX2, or RetroArch. The last two need the same PS2 BIOS file, added through the app or the Files app. You can also stream PCSX2 from a PC. Common Android BIOS problems
If the app does not see the BIOS, import it again from the settings.
- The BIOS is not detected. Re-import it through the app's BIOS or System settings. Moving the file by hand rarely works on Android.
- An app from a random APK acts strange. Remove it and install NetherSX2 from its official GitHub instead.
- A game opens to a black screen. That is usually a region mismatch, so try the matching region BIOS.
